Windows

“The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect” when you add a hard drive to Windows 2008 R2 / 2012 backup

If you are using Windows backup and want to back up to multiple USB drives, you may receive the above error when configuring the second additional USB drive. If you do, execute the following steps to add it manually.

  1. Run Command Prompt under an administrator elevation.
  2. Run the following command to get the required disk information: wbadmin get disks
  3. Copy the Disk Identifier including the brackets {}
  4. Run the following command: wbadmin enable backup -addtarget:{xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx}
  5. At the next prompt (Do you want to enable scheduled backups with the above settings?) type y and hit Enter.
  6. You will be prompted to have the drive formatted, if so select yes
  7. Repeat procedure for all additional USB drives

Good luck, if you have any questions email me on [email protected]
